September 30th is Truth & Reconciliation Day - Events around Town


September 30 marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—a time to reflect, learn, and honour Survivors of residential schools, their families, and Indigenous communities. Across our region, events and gatherings provide opportunities for education, remembrance, and meaningful connection. Here are some local events you may wish to take part in.

September 30, 2025 11:45 am – 3:00 pm  PUBLIC WALK - UBC Outdoor Amphitheatre 1956 Main Mall, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z1

Walking Forward: Honouring Youth, Carrying Hope Join us for an Intergenerational March to commemorate Orange Shirt Day (OSD). The Faculties of Applied Science, Land and Food Systems and Forestry are honoured to host this event. This is one way the Faculties demonstrate their commitment to the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan.

September 30, 2025 9:00 am – 1:00 pm BREAKFAST & ACTIVITY - Arts Umbrella – Granville Island 1400 Johnston St Vancouver, BC V6H 3S1
Activities and talks will be age-appropriate and led by Indigenous artists and knowledge keepers. REGISTER Welcome Breakfast 9:00 am – 10:15 am Join us for a Welcome Breakfast, including a traditional welcome and blessing song by Tsunaxen, Willie Lewis. This is a time for our community to come together to connect, reflect and enjoy Bannock boards provided by Tawnshi, featuring a fusion of Indigenous flavours and ingredients. 

Each event is PayWhat-You-Can, with a suggested donation of $10 for each event

Children’s Book Reading with Joseph A. Dandurand 10:30 am – 11:15 am Join Poet and Author Joseph A. Dandurand for a reading of his children’s book, ‘The Frog’.

Family Art Project with Aleen Sparrow 11:30 am – 12:45 pm Join Aleen Sparrow for an interactive Family Art Project. Aleen will lead children and caregivers in a traditional weaving art project that they can bring home with them.

Cedar Weaving Hearts: Join Haida Artist/Weaver Todd DeVries in this hands-on workshop to create a cedar heart, symbolizing Every Child Matters. Activity #578794 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Cedar Weaving Bracelets: In this meaningful workshop led by Haida Artist/Weaver Todd DeVries, create a cedar bracelet representing non-violence and anti-bullying. Activity #578795 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

September 30, 2025 10:00 am Walk meet up at 10:00 am; walk begins at 11:00 am Walk starts from 1719 Franklin Street
We begin the day with an Honour Walk at 10:00 AM from the Vancouver Aboriginal Community Policing Centre to Grandview Park. We encourage everyone to bring their drums and wear orange in solidarity.  All are welcome. 



September 30, 2025 10:30 am – 11:00 am STORYTIME Richmond Public Library – Brighouse 100-7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond, BC V6Y 1R8
Join us for storytime at the Brighouse Branch on National Truth and Reconciliation Day. We will be featuring picture books written by Indigenous authors and illustrators. Drop in. No registration required. Children ages 8 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver.

September 30, 2025 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm Queens Park South Field (near the baseball field) 101 3rd Ave, New Westminster, BC 
Celebrating Culture and Identity – The powwow, artisan vendors, and Indigenous foods showcase the beauty, strength, and continuity of Indigenous traditions.

September 30, 2025 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm Derek Doubleday Arboretum 21177 Fraser Hwy, Langley, BC V3A 4M6
5th Annual gathering on National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. There will be an Educational Story Walk set-up all weekend, and into the evening event. Gather with drummers and speakers to deepen your commitment to learning and reconciliation. As in previous years, our gathering will end with a Candlelight Walking Vigil, around the park, ending on the berm.

September 30, 2025 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm Place des Arts 1120 Brunette Avenue Coquitlam, BC V3K 1G2
Participate in this free event that focuses on building a better community through art with Indigenous artists and educators Christine Mackenzie and Nova Weipert.
Coquitlam Public Library will be at our centre featuring books from their Indigenous Collections and conducting a small craft activity. Participants may sign up for one of the following workshop times on Eventbrite: • 1:00 - 2:30 pm • 3:00 - 4:30 pm

September 30, 2025 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Thunderbird Square & Civic Plaza 32388 Veterans Way, Abbotsford, BC V2T 0B3
We’re walking together to share learning opportunities for the public about Truth and Reconciliation, as well as the history of Residential Schools. The gathering will start with the Opening Ceremony at 10:00 am at Thunderbird Square, followed by the opening of each station (story walk, puppet performance, history lessons, gamily activities and learning, community art exhibition etc.).

• Indigenous guest speakers • Cultural performances • 10 Indigenous Vendors • Food trucks We encourage everyone to wear an orange shirt Let’s walk together in honour, truth and reconciliation.

September 30, 2025 11:00 am – 3:00 pm Sardis Park 6898 School Ln Chilliwack, BC V2R 5T1
Hosted by the Wilma’s Transition Society, the event including opening cultural ceremonies featuring prayers, drumming, and dancing. The event also features food trucks, vendor tables from local community organizations, live music by a local Indigenous artist, face painting, bouncy castles for children, and much more.
