September 30th is Truth & Reconciliation Day - Events around Town
September 30 marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—a time to reflect, learn, and honour Survivors of residential schools, their families, and Indigenous communities. Across our region, events and gatherings provide opportunities for education, remembrance, and meaningful connection. Here are some local events you may wish to take part in.

Walking Forward: Honouring Youth, Carrying Hope Join us for an Intergenerational March to commemorate Orange Shirt Day (OSD). The Faculties of Applied Science, Land and Food Systems and Forestry are honoured to host this event. This is one way the Faculties demonstrate their commitment to the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan.

Activities and talks will be age-appropriate and led by Indigenous artists and knowledge keepers. REGISTER Welcome Breakfast 9:00 am – 10:15 am Join us for a Welcome Breakfast, including a traditional welcome and blessing song by Tsunaxen, Willie Lewis. This is a time for our community to come together to connect, reflect and enjoy Bannock boards provided by Tawnshi, featuring a fusion of Indigenous flavours and ingredients.
Each event is PayWhat-You-Can, with a suggested donation of $10 for each event
Children’s Book Reading with Joseph A. Dandurand 10:30 am – 11:15 am Join Poet and Author Joseph A. Dandurand for a reading of his children’s book, ‘The Frog’.
Family Art Project with Aleen Sparrow 11:30 am – 12:45 pm Join Aleen Sparrow for an interactive Family Art Project. Aleen will lead children and caregivers in a traditional weaving art project that they can bring home with them.

We begin the day with an Honour Walk at 10:00 AM from the Vancouver Aboriginal Community Policing Centre to Grandview Park. We encourage everyone to bring their drums and wear orange in solidarity. All are welcome.

Join us for storytime at the Brighouse Branch on National Truth and Reconciliation Day. We will be featuring picture books written by Indigenous authors and illustrators. Drop in. No registration required. Children ages 8 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver.

5th Annual gathering on National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. There will be an Educational Story Walk set-up all weekend, and into the evening event. Gather with drummers and speakers to deepen your commitment to learning and reconciliation. As in previous years, our gathering will end with a Candlelight Walking Vigil, around the park, ending on the berm.

Participate in this free event that focuses on building a better community through art with Indigenous artists and educators Christine Mackenzie and Nova Weipert.

We’re walking together to share learning opportunities for the public about Truth and Reconciliation, as well as the history of Residential Schools. The gathering will start with the Opening Ceremony at 10:00 am at Thunderbird Square, followed by the opening of each station (story walk, puppet performance, history lessons, gamily activities and learning, community art exhibition etc.).

Hosted by the Wilma’s Transition Society, the event including opening cultural ceremonies featuring prayers, drumming, and dancing. The event also features food trucks, vendor tables from local community organizations, live music by a local Indigenous artist, face painting, bouncy castles for children, and much more.
